As of late, Columbia has experienced quite a lot of earthquakes. There are few a explanations as to why the country is a victim of so many earthquakes.First, Columbia is near to four plates that converge all at the corner of Columbia. Those plates as you can see in the pictures that are presented are the Nazca,South American,Caribbean and Cocos plate. Not only does the four plates converge but in the latest research, their has been a discovery of a tear in the South American plate. This explains a lot of the question that has rose to the surface about Columbia's geology.
Since Columbia experiences earthquakes, there has been a database set up to monitor and scan for movements,The database has recorded has recorded more than 100,000 Colombian earthquakes.
Columbia has also built a National System for Disaster Management and Prevention, associated a comprehensive National Disaster Prevention and Attention.

Very interesting information! I was offshore in that area a few years back studying the seafloor and subsurface sediments, but I had no idea about that tear zone inland (more info see link) ..that would explain a lot of the movement..

Jordan,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on your blog.
Columbia does experience many earthquakes and 100,000 is a big number of these earthquakes. When was the largest earthquake in Columbia?
Thank you
Malala Kakar
Wow Columbia is a geologically exiting area. I didn't even think there would be places with four plate boundaries in its vicinity. The tear must have been a cool find for the scientists but how is Columbia's earthquake activity different to other countries on plate boundaries?
ReplyDeleteI never knew Columbia has four plate. Interesting Blog Jordan thank you for sharing. I'm definitely will be checking out your reference info.
